Space in the Highlands Brass Academy is limited so be sure to apply early!
Prospective Students
For the Summer 2010 session,
applications must be
submitted by Friday, May 31th, 2010 -- the deadline for scholarship applications is Friday May 14th..
The Highlands Brass Academy accepts applications from musicians who play orchestral: trumpet, [french] horn,
trombone, euphonium or tuba. The HBA requires that applying musicians play at least at a Royal Conservatory
of Music Grade 6 level (
aka - typical entry requirements to a Bachelor of Music program at university),
or better and are comfortable with ensemble music of grades 4 to 6. Recorded
auditions are ideal for us to get a true sense of your playing level, but references from music
teachers, private lesson teachers and ensemble conductors are also accepted. Scholarship
applications require a recorded audition.
Music parts will be sent to successful applicants before the start of the course. Difficulty
of the parts will be based on the applicants playing ability. There may be last minute
adjustments to assigned parts, so a respectable sight-reading ability is desired.
Here are special requirements for the various instruments (please include responses in "Additional
Instrument Notes" below):
Trumpet
Playing ability on trumpets of various keys (Bb, C, Eb) and/or flugelhorn and piccolo is highly desirable
but not a requirement. Most of the trumpets parts will be in the keys of C or Bb.
The HBA will not have specialty trumpets for loaning or lending and so specialty parts will be
assigned to those who have access to these instruments.
Horn
State your preference for high or low playing (such as in a section of 4 horns).
In any case, versitility is good.
Trombone
State your instrument (tenor or bass trombone) and whether you can double on euphonium.
Euphonium
State weather euphonium is your main instrument concentration or if you double on trombone or
tuba.
Tuba
State the key of instrument(s) you play. Though there may be some higher parts, CC or BBb contrabass
tubas are preferred most of the time as the most versatile. The HBA will notify successful applicants
if an Eb or F bass tuba will be desired (where available).
Student Fees
The student fees are as follows:
- Tuition: 425$
- Lodging: 400$
- Meal plan: 120$ (continental breakfast and lunches)
(costs for the optional private lessons coming soon)
Upon acceptance to the program, participants must mail in a cheque drawn on a
Canadian bank, or an international money order for 100$ CDN in order to hold
their place in the course. Cheques and money orders
must be made to "The Highlands Brass Academy". The HBA's postal address is:

Scholarships
The Highlands Brass Academy offers a limited number of scholarships to up-and-coming players showing
a promising proficiency on their instrument and a love for brass music. There is no age restriction
for the scholarships and recipients will have their tuition, lodging and meal plan fees covered by the HBA. If you
wish to be considered for a scholarship, please send an email (in addition to filling in
the regular application form below) to
apply@highlandsbrass.org
telling us of your musical goals and aspirations and describing your financial need (this
information will be kept confidential by the administration of the HBA). Also, a recorded
audition is requested and it should demonstrate you at your best with a solo
or concert piece (orchestral excerpts are also good). The HBA's clinicians will review all
scholarship audition material, and the recipients will be notified two weeks after the
final application deadline.
Masterclasses and Solos
If you would like to perform in one of the public evening masterclasses, please indicate your
interest in the application form below ("Additional Instrument Notes"). HBA admissions will collect
from you the name(s) of the piece(s) of music. A copy of the piano accompaniment may be required
in advance if the accompanist is not familiar with the work - if you are going to play
orchestral excerpts, then this is not applicable.
Also, if you would be willing
to perform a solo with ensemble, please also indicate your interest in this. The HBA can't
guarantee that you will, but this would give access to more repertoire selection.
Application
To apply to the HBA, start by filling in the following form:
If you would like to include additional information beyond the above form, send an email
to
apply@highlandsbrass.org.
Be sure to include your name and instrument for reference to your application.
Once your application is received, the HBA will contact your reference in order to attest to
your playing ability. A recorded audition might be requested and details of this
will be communicated directly to you.
After submitting your application, you will receive an email confirmation within one
or two business days. If you don't receive confirmation, please send an email to
apply@highlandsbrass.org.
